Of course, I would have loved a wonderfully happy ending where everyone lived happily ever after, but the movie would not have been as good with that kind of ending.
The ending was the cherry on top, in my opinion. It perfectly wrapped up the film. It wasn't a happy ending, but it wasn't entirely sad, either.
It helped make this movie great. Some of these bad reviews make me wonder what movie these people were watching. The coverage of 'Uncle Pablo' seems pretty accurate, and Benicio Del Toro plays him just right - a 'Godfather' far scarier than Brando ever was, Del Toro smolders and growls even as he tries to hide behind family all of whom are actually dispensable.

Of course, Benecio can do no wrong in my book, the guy is simply the greatest living actor of our time he was second but now that the true master Phillip Seymour Hoffman has left the planet, he's in first.
He totally channels Escobar, just as he did Che'. The story gets a teeny bit wonky a couple times; you know, those 'that would never happen' or 'people don't talk like that' moments, but overall it was gripping, suspenseful, and had a good share of violence in it if you're not familiar with how insanely brutally vicious Escobar was, you may get queasy in certain parts but understand that the way he's depicted in the movie is the way he was in real life; the guy brought down a passenger jet killing people, for Christ sake.
I'd never seen Hutcherson before, he is a very fine actor as well. The whole movie is well cast, well acted, and well directed.
Maybe not a 5-star, which I rarely give, but definitely all of 4; if they had half stars I'd say 4. Having watched Netflix's Narcos, I was somewhat familiar with all that transpired with Pablo Escobar.
My first thoughts were that this would be some cheesy hack-job romance revolved around surfing that tied Pablo Escobar in the mix.
I was wrong This movie had tension and was a thriller in the last act. I didn't see the ending coming either. Del Toro was great as Escobar.
The fiancee did a great job. Hutcherson's role should have been played by someone else in my opinion, but he was serviceable.
I was engaged the entire movie primarily because the movie cuts back and forth to form the complete story.
The movie tied in real situations that Escobar was involved in while he was trying to track down our main character, so I thought that was a nice touch.
All-in-all this is a highly watchable film. This may be one of the most touching movies I have watched in a while. And I watch them all.
Josh Hutcherson is fantastic in his role and the transformation is wonderfully expected. At first I felt as though Pablo Escobar was a misunderstood entity being sought by higher powers in an American attack on the "Drug War.
I am moved by this movie and I highly recommend it to others who want something to watch. Something which captures you and makes you want to pay attention.
This film does not use mass explosion and visual effects to grab your attention. It involves a subtle, deep plot that grabs you by the seat of your soul and forces you to understand the human nature of it's victims.

However, 'Nick' soon begins to feel uncomfortable working on the estate, he see's things and soon realizes the nature of 'Pablo's' business dealings, he wants 'Maria' to leave with him Eventually the authorities will close in on 'Pablo's' empire leaving the drug-baron with the one option, to make a deal and give himself up, however before surrender takes place he must hide his fortune to protect his family's future, he has singled out several locations for this and charges several trusted allies to follow his instructions to hide the fortune, 'Nick' is one of those chosen This is actually a well-crafted film with a strong story-line, though not being award-worthy it is well worth taking time-out to watch.
Features - Includes 30 minutes behind the scenes featurette - catching 'Pablo'a. Rather tedious to watch. Unengaging and subsequently uninteresting. Falls incredibly short in every department.

As for the ending, it's pretty obvious what happens, even if you don't see it happen on screen. I would have liked a little more explanation as to how characters ended up where they were through the film, but the movie doesn't lose anything because of it.
