Anamanaguchi - Secret Sky BAND SET (4K)

These are certainly good and enjoyable versions, but I can't help note that the band feels and sounds somewhat tired here compared to the aforementioned Live In Concert: Bremen film.

Jehad is a Middle-Eastern-sounding number that is not present on any studio recording. It is dark and atmospheric yet never degenerates into ambient territory.

I like it. Reverie similarly never appeared on a studio album. It is a beautiful, mellow, Classical piece driven by grand piano and acoustic guitar.

It is very solemn to the point of almost sending you to sleep--in a good way! It is at this point that we get a couple of lesser numbers. Meheeco is jazzier here than the studio version on 's Sky 3 and starts with a rather long improvisational part that I don't value highly.

Still, that one is much less of a problem than the downright awful Would You say I'm In Love With You which features cheesy keyboard sounds and an unbearable tropical-island-beat.

This is something you would expect in a touristy bar in some tropical holiday resort, not on a Rock album.

Overall, a rather nice live album. I have not seen the video version of it. Most band's I know of that called their albums by their order of appearance 1, 2, 3, etc.

This was, however, not entirely without justification as this live release did contain lots of new material that appears only on this album and nowhere else but also a few Sky classics.

So despite being a live album, this was also, in one sense, properly speaking Sky 5. The contents are a mixed bag with some strong moments amidst longer sections of boredom.

Apparently there are several versions of this album, some lacking the 20 minute plus opening The Animals. It is however not a great loss!

It is clear from the start that Sky took a more jazzy and improvisational approach on this album. It starts out well enough in a moderately structured and melodic vein, but rather soon it deteriorates; half way through it looses direction and becomes a rather tedious, slow, jazzy thing.

This piece falls very far behind previous "side-long" compositions by the band such as Where Opposites Meet from Sky 1 and Fifo from Sky 2.

This is followed by the equally dull The Swan which is a very understated, mellow, Classical piece. If you have managed to stay awake until the end of this track, you're in for something more interesting.

The best track on the whole album is KP1 very unimaginatively titled after the initials of its creator, Kevin Peek.

With such a track there is still hope for this album. Next up is Dance Of The Little Fairies, one of the previously familiar numbers, which is a good piece though I prefer other versions over this one.

Love Duet is together with the aforementioned KP1 the other really worthy new piece of music presented here. Very pleasant, but not particularly memorable.

The Bathroom Song is utterly and completely pointless and consists of someone playing piano and mindlessly singing la la la la while the rest of the band presumably had gone to the toilet!

It might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but there's really no excuse for including it on a live album. KP2 is a fun little, uptempo rocking number.

I fail to detect any real connection to KP1. Antigua slows things down considerably and is a lovely, Classical-style guitar piece.

They return to familiar ground with Sahara which was originally a great number from Sky 2 that reminds me a lot of Al Di Meola's style, though the original studio version is better.

Sakura Variations sounds to me like mindless improvisation on acoustic guitar that really goes nowhere. Meheeco is another disappointment as it reminds little of its studio counterpart.

Hotta, on the other hand, does remind of its studio counterpart, but it lacks the latter's excitement. A couple of stronger moments, but overall a rather disappointing release.

I much recommend to begin with the earlier and very much better live concert video Live In Concert: Bremen, Germany actually recorded in ; sometimes goes under the alternative title of Live Across Europe.

Sky Five Live is primarily recommended for fans for whom I reckon it must be essential due to the several songs not available elsewhere.

While the DVD states that the event took place in , the band's official website claims that this information is mistaken and that it was actually in The track list shown on the DVD is also almost completely mistaken according to the same source.

Sky was here a very tight unit and the performance is close to perfect as far as the playing goes, the band also seem to enjoy what they are doing.

After a protracted search for a record company, Sky signed with the small European label Ariola Records. Williams' concurrent solo instrumental hit — " Cavatina — Theme from The Deer Hunter " — also helped to raise the band's profile.

However, this selling was counterbalanced by some negative reviews from critics accustomed to Williams' classical performances, who remained unimpressed by his new direction with Sky.

Sky's self-titled debut album released in was highly successful in Britain and Australia, quickly reaching gold record status and eventually topping out as a platinum record.

The album featured versions of Eric Satie's "Gymnopedie No. Monkman's 'Cannonball' was a minor hit single, and the keyboard player also contributed the twenty-minute second-side composition "Where Opposites Meet" intended to combine and display the band's diverse influences.

The band toured the UK in summer and autumn , particular triumphs being sold-out concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and the Dominion Theatre in London the latter a five-night sellout.

In , Sky recorded and released their second album, Sky 2. This was a double album that built upon its predecessor's success, becoming the tenth highest selling album in Britain that year.

The album included Monkman's side-long rock suite "FIFO" a piece inspired by computer information processing techniques, stands for " First In, First Out " and four classical pieces including three established chamber music pieces played entirely straight and the band's souped-up electric treatment of Bach 's " Toccata and Fugue in D Minor ".

The latter was released as a single under the name "Toccata" and reached number 5 in the national pop charts, giving the band the opportunity of performing on Top of the Pops.

The music for this programme was by Sky, featuring tracks from the first two albums. Following further tours of Australia and the UK, Francis Monkman left the band in to concentrate on his own projects having scored success with his soundtrack to the film The Long Good Friday.

The split was entirely amicable, and the band had no doubts about carrying on despite the fact that Monkman had been Sky's most prominent original composer and arranger.

Monkman was replaced as Sky's keyboard player by Steve Gray. Despite his initial reluctance to return to playing live, Gray was persuaded to join the band in time for their first European tour.

A benefit show to commemorate the 20th anniversary of human rights organisation Amnesty International , the latter was conceived by British producer Martin Lewis and was the first-ever rock concert held at the abbey.

The landmark event resulted in Sky receiving considerable positive media coverage: it was also videotaped for a BBC TV special and subsequently released on home video and laserdisc.

The Westminster Abbey concert was also the launch event for the band's third album, Sky 3. A generally brighter and breezier album than its predecessors, the record demonstrated Steve Gray's new and prominent compositional role within Sky, moving away from the harpsichordal and psychedelic elements of the Monkman years and taking the band towards a more jazz -influenced sound.

Sky went on to tour Australia, Europe and the UK in support of the release. The fourth Sky album, Sky 4: Forthcoming , was released in March Sky's first album to feature no original material, it consisted predominantly of arrangements of classical compositions and was marketed under the slogan "Genius Past, Genius Forthcoming".

Once again, the band toured the UK and Australia to promote the album and followed this up with trips to Europe and Japan. The Australian autumn tour featured the debut of plenty of new material, much of which was included on a live double album, Sky Five Live , released in January Sky released their sixth album, Cadmium , in December It also featured the first examples of commissioned compositions from contemporary writers from outside the band: Alan Tarney Kevin Peek's old friend and fellow Cliff Richard collaborator provided two further original tunes.

Two concerts at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane , London were filmed and broadcast on Christmas Eve, , with songwriter and singer-songwriter Patrick Ros as special guest.

Ros provided three seasonal compositions of his own on which he was backed by the band. Having previously hinted that his work with Sky had been intended as a five-year stint, John Williams parted company with the band in February , returning to a full-time classical career.

As with Monkman, Williams' departure was amicable. However, it damaged Sky's profile since despite the band's collective efforts to present themselves as a partnership of equals the guitarist had remained Sky's biggest star and live draw.

The band released a stopgap "greatest hits" compilation called Masterpieces , released on mass-media label Telstar and featuring a previously unreleased live version of the Beatles song " The Fool on the Hill ", performed as a classical guitar duet by Williams and Peek.

Having opted not to recruit a permanent replacement for Williams, Sky remained as a quartet and opted to tour with a succession of guest musicians.
