In order to alleviate and reduce the horror of the Dresden bombing, the story writers of this film have added a love affair between a German nurse and a wounded British bomber pilot who was forced to parachute into enemy territory when his plane was hit by Nazi fire.
She finds him by chance and restores him to health. Yet she does not know until late in the film who he really is, but by then it is too late to "change course".
Others have objected to this addition with good reason, but it is in the end only a movie and brings a different type of tension, action, and relief to the rest which the producers might have felt could have become too overbearing.
And, for me, the rather flat ending to all of this might just as well have had the age old words THE END that used to appear on screen when all was said and done.
What is most interesting about this DVD is the special feature after the film is over which shows how the explosions were created and the necessary steps taken to protect cast and any one else.
One can only marvel at the technical ingenuity. The scenario of a downed British pilot falling in love with a german nurse is improbable, as are several scenes where this pilot navigates a German hospital and wedding reception undetected.
The special effects are limited but effective. Character development is excellent as is period detail, and the acting makes up for any minor issues.
This was the most expensive German TV show ever made, and it shows. The sets and acting are superb. There are some historical inaccuracies in the bombing of the city, but for me those can be forgiven given the need to condense the sequence of events.
Three things did, however, somewhat get in the way of this mini series being better: 1. That said, this film was entertaining and informative.
The movie mini series perhaps is well told. Romantic elements of the characters portrayed are an obvious creation to help hold attention.
The historical events that saw a city being destroyed by and because of the need to pacify a madman not Hitler in this case are portrayed with a level not associated with other war films.
The destruction is more than just a city but the destruction of people. The movie reveals the agony that the allies had to go through in choosing the looser in the dreadful lottery.
I probably over analyzed this show which takes place over the time period surrounding the destruction of Dresden during WW2. I felt many facts were distorted or omitted and there were obvious technical or story line mistakes.
I found it had good entertainment value, but my real German friends that recommended it really, really liked it.
Maybe something got lost in the subtitles. A movie about the fire-bombing of Dresden, from the perspective of a young German woman from a privileged family.
The plot is complicated by the fact that just before this cataclysmic event, the young woman meets and English paratrooper in hiding.
The personal story of the young woman was trite in comparison with the desperate survival struggle of the general population at this late time in the war.
Devastation, flaming inferno, havoc wreaked Beyond all that human relationships are carried on regardless. Whether there is a future or not we need each other to get through it.
A good movie about life. Whether you watch it for its entertainment value or its historical content doesn't matter, it has both.
A traumatic reminder of the fortunes of war and how they keep our feet on the ground and remind us that in some circumstances we are no more than ants in a flood.

The depiction of Germany, it's people and attitudes, gave a lot of food for thought. The showing of the firebombing's devastating effects and the pilot's detachment provided a strong contrast between perpetrators and victims.
A particular scene that sticks in the mind is of a Jewish man making his way home whilst being followed by a group of German children singing an anti-Semitic song as if playing a game with him, again, perpetrators and victim.
So why only three stars? Because of the ridiculous love triangle with the hero and heroine locking eyes and immediately falling in love.
Pahhhhh, what a lot of tosh! On the back of this film I read the book and watched the film of 'Slaughterhouse 5', an interesting contrast to 'Dresden' which, is still worth a watch I feel.
This film would possibly not be everyone's cup of tea but, having served in Germany and later lived amongst German citizens, I can understand some of the feelings of the people.
It is a very sad and true love story set amongst the bombing of Dresden by the allied bombers and gives a picture of how the citizens felt about the ruination of their once beautiful city.
I suppose it demonstrates the futility of war. A difficult subject to report on but the film is, to my mind, very well made. One person found this helpful.
Watched this on TV and could not wait for it to be released on DVD watched it strait away when I got it really great drama and one to watch every now and again, love the fact that the story has bits of truth in there and the ending says it all very sad!!!!
But a reminder of the horrors of war and the suffering of the innocent sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time!!!!!
