When Criterion released the standard DVD some years ago I immediately bought it and this has been my go to copy for years. That's all changed now with this new Blu-ray.
One thing that viewers will notice right away is how Russell Metty's Oscar winning cinematography dazzles the eye. Colors are sharp and vivid with even the smallest details very prominent.
This is very apparent in the art direction, set decorations and costumes all of which won Oscars that year. Metty, who photographed "Touch of Evil" and "The Misfits" during his long career with Universal, had disagreements with director Stanley Kubrick during filming and his insistence on using natural lighting during nighttime scenes campfires, torches, etc.
The results are very apparent now in this restored version with the faces of the actors taking on a more natural glow mainly yellow from the flames of the torches inside tents that make the whole scene more authentic than using the studio lighting that Kubrick preferred.
Daylight scenes are another wonder and just pop off the screen. Greens, reds, blues, yellows are not only striking but vivid in every scene Bitrate: Since the reconstruction was used for this new restoration there are still some soft scenes where close-ups are not as crystal clear as other portions but these scenes are few and do not detract from the overall presentation.

The picture quality of this Blu-ray is absolutely outstanding. Fine detail is beyond exceptional. This transfer is right up there with the quality we received from The 10 Commandments and Ben Hur Blu-rays.
From the very first frame, you can see individual pebbles from 60 feet away. The clarity of the image is just beyond belief. The sound quality is equally exceptional.
I encountered no issues whatsoever, and heard everything clearly. This restored edition includes extra footage not seen before. However, the footage doesn't really add anything to the film.
It mainly consists of minor dialogue, eye contact between characters, and random shots of people and areas. There are a few special features included on the disc, including a short documentary on the restoration of the film.
Overall, it's simply the best the film has ever looked and sounded. I was simply blown away by the quality of this new transfer. This restored edition is a showpiece for the format, and does the film justice.
This is a marvelous showcasing of one of Classic Hollywood's biggest and most enduring films. I can't recommend it enough. I encountered no issues playing this disc on my LG model Blu-ray player.

The hard work in restoring the film shows in the final product. The colors and details are given new life and are visually impressive when viewed on a quality 4K television or with a projector our viewing was with an OPPO blu Ray player paired with an EPSON projector.

An epic film, very well made and lovingly restored. Faultless transfer to Blu Ray which results in amazing colour rendition. You get everything here - great acting all round, beautifully filmed, excellent location photography and the most impressive battle sequences ever filmed.
Thousands of extras were used to create an unforgettable final battle - no CGI used back in Finally you get Stanley Kubrick directing. This is a classic film given a new leases of life in this restoration into high definition.
Picture quality is excellent. The film has a wonderful screenplay by Dalton Trumbo who had just emerged from years of being black-listed by the McCarthy witch-hunt crew.
The excellent script attracted top class actors such as Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov and Jean Simmons all of whom relish their parts.
Directed by the brilliant Stanley Kubrick the end result is outstanding. An especially interesting extra feature is an interview with the star Kirk Douglas who is 99 years old.
He gives a very interesting take on the making of the film of which he was executive producer. Of course, he can't resist ending the interview with the wholly appropriate quote: "I am Spartacus!
