However, its a military used on an earth that has been overtaken, by aliens. The aliens could be using dead people, and reanimating them.
At the end of the film, the one technician has a sentence of "three lifetimes" in the cube. Humanoid shapes in suspended animation, surround this room, where the guy is given a lobotomy and chip implant.
There are several cubes in use, we also discover. The human-cyborg people who are running the show, are also victims of the aliens.
They have had extensive cyborg upgrades to their bodies, apparently from their own experiences in the cube. However, the various cubes do exist on this earth, but in this dark, dystopian future, after an apparently covert alien take over.
Finally, the film asks us to examine our humanity. Why or how can humans inflict torture on others? Its interesting to place this film in a socio-historical context.
These questions about torture and the military, were raised during the USA involvement in Iraq, included Abu Grab, when Rumsfeld decided that the Geneva convention no longer applied.
The nature of evil is explored. If you are tortured to the point, where you can no longer believe in God, you are burned to a crisp.
Again, a reflection on then current situations with Catholic choir boys having their faith destroyed thru sexual abuse, then receiving the fires of hell for not believing in God.
The symbolism is obvious, and lacks subtlety. Even so, most people don't seem to pick up on it. What type of humans could dream up solitary confinement, capital punishment, or ten year sentences for drug crimes?
We cant see the vacancy of humanity in the folks who are responsible for our penal system in real life. However, you can use symbolism to show the lack of humanity, in a film.
The humans who lack humanity, contain the cyborg implants. The soldier, and the three "suits" from upstairs, who run the whole CUBE show.
Once you get past the horror show gore content, and the minimalistic sets for the CUBE films, you actually get into some philosophical content, that is lacking in most horror films.
By posing questions, without giving cut and dried answers, the film avoids the trap of being didactic, a modern day morality play.
Yet it should allow you to ask the question, would YOU put somebody in the cube? Would YOU work for a system, that tortures people?
And what kind of hero, is it going to take, to stand up to the corruption of this system, and challenge it?

One person found this helpful. While the villain in this is so OTT as to be completely wonderful, the movie is too complicated and makes a mess of trying to answer questions that were best left unanswered did we really need to know what happens to someone who makes it through the Cube?
The gore is more unpleasant this time round and unlike the first Cube movie where it was relevant and shocking or the earlier Saw movies where it propels the story this time it feels forced and uncomfortable.
Limp and ill thought out, stick to Cube 1 and ignore the poxy sequel Hypercube and let your imagination do the work. Wasn't the original point that the cube was the sum of our collective irresponsibility, not the toy of some crackpot dictatorship?

In all honesty this is a pretty decent setup if you were to watch the movies in the order of prequel, first, and squel instead of the other way around.
However, because most will likely watch the movies in the order that they were released this only creates more questions than answers. I will say that as far as plot, scene progression, character development, and actual atmosphere goes, Cube Zero is definitely a better movie than Cube 2 but I think the original movie is probably the best of the three.
This is a fun movie for a weekend watch with friends or a nice couch movie with your partner but I doubt it's anything you're going to remember a year from now.
Still, it's nice to see that I could finally find something on Prime that didn't bore me in less than twenty minutes. If you've never seen a cube movie before, you can watch them in whatever order you like.

He's cubed, as in, cut into cubes. Then, you have a band of people, looking for their way out of the maze. We discover that its a cube, within a larger matrix of 25 cubes, always moving in relationship to the others.
