The Night is Short, Walk on Girl Covers Everything

Fate, time, emotions, introspective thought, and Japanese mythology, dance around this story, like colored carp streamers in the wind.

The interwoven perspectives of the dreamer girl and the pessimistic but persistent boy braid together into a connective red thread. Was it a forced coincidence?

Or was it fat "Or maybe we think it's a coincidence, but it's just that we can't see the tangled threads of fate. Or was it fate?

Either way, I loved it. Now either I patiently for Tatami Galaxy to be translated or my Japanese improves so much I'm able to read it in its native language which is unlikely.

This book isn't for you if you don't like: - Fast and almost unclear transitions between speaker's perspectives - First person storytelling - Extreme strange occurrences that are outside the real of reason set in a realistic setting Kyoto - Breaking the fourth wall Sep 24, Princess rated it liked it.

I thought that I would better understand the content if I read the novel. Same as with the film, there is a lot of silliness contained in this novel.

I liked the quirky characters a lot, including the supporting characters. They are definitely personalities that I have never seen before.

However, most of the magical realism elements were a miss for me. My eyes would just glaze over a lot of the pages. Still, I can say that this had a very powerful opening.

There are only four chapters, and each are quite episodic, with a different story arc but same characters involved.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for providing a copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the setting and the characters in this book but more than anything, I loved the way the author wrote the story.

In my opinion, the language was a bit formal? Because I knew some parts of Kyoto that appears in this book, it was easier for me to picture the girl strolling down the cities of Kyoto.

Nov 18, Elaine rated it it was ok Shelves: netgalley , kindle. I was thrilled when my request was approved; I love all things Japan, the culture, the food, the history, and I'm always interested in reading Japanese authors whose works have been translated for an American audience.

I wasn't sure what to expect from The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, since I've never read this author before but the premise sounded romance-y.

But, the story wasn't as straightforward as I expected. A beautiful young woman draws the eyes of many men as she travels the streets of Kyoto, especially one young man in particular.

We meet her in many settings, the bar, a book fair; and encounter the quirky locals she crosses paths with in the process. The story shifts from the young woman's POV to the young man's and there are many characters to keep track of, many of them superfluous to the story, though they add a certain local flavor.

The prose is well-written with a good sense of place; the cobblestoned streets of Kyoto, the narrow corridors, the blinking lights of the bars and shops, readers get a real feel and sense of this historical Japanese city, just one of many.

But the writing is passive when it comes to characterizing and describing the young woman. Early in the story, she allows an old, drunk man to fondle her breasts.

Because he's an old, sad drunk? That's no excuse, and this scene of an old perv really marred the rest of my reading experience and left an icky taste in my mouth.

I'm not surprised to discover the author is a man. This wasn't for me, but some people may enjoy reading it especially if they want to learn a bit more about Japan.

Feb 26, Whitney rated it liked it Shelves: owned-physical-books , as-the-page-turns. It was a bit of a weird book.

In the end, I was pulled in by the wait for the two main characters to finally really meet. A weird read, but still intriguing. Although it took me months to finish this, it was an entertaining read.

The story was a bit slow and confusing at first due "Do all you can and then wait for providence. The story was a bit slow and confusing at first due to the introduction of the supporting characters, the colorful scenarios, etc.

It was somewhat annoying at first for me coz of the fantasy elements in the story. It clashes on my mind - the realistic part and the fantasy part.

BUT I love it. I fully love it later on. All the scenes, supporting cast, everything comes together. It all leads to one thing - fate.

This was my first time to read a Japanese-themed book and author, It was different from reading a manga. I can see myself looking for books like this.

A big thanks for the free e-copy provided by Yen Press and the author via NetGalley. View 1 comment. Although a magical read full of quirky characters, twists and turns, the author clearly doesn't have a very high opinion of men.

All men are perverts who love porn and groping women-is one of the main takeaways from this book. I hope it's just the author projecting My other complaint related to the first is that the main character is completely unlikable.

He spends most of his time stalking the woman he has a crush on who he's put on a massive pedestal and gets angry and annoyed at liter Although a magical read full of quirky characters, twists and turns, the author clearly doesn't have a very high opinion of men.

He spends most of his time stalking the woman he has a crush on who he's put on a massive pedestal and gets angry and annoyed at literally everything and everyone else around him.

He constantly sabotages other people's happiness in the pursuit of his own. The heroine is a delight though. I love how kind and curious she is, and how she sees the good in everything.

She's way too good for the guy stalking her. As for the translation, the descriptive text is absolutely fantastic, but the dialogue feels a little flat at times and I can normally tell what the Japanese said.

This is probably a personal preference but I wish the dialogue at times read as naturally as the scene text. Nov 23, Nicholas Sandoval rated it it was amazing.

If you enjoy magical realism than this novel might fit the bill for you. This is a really adorable and funny story set across four major events for the main characters.

I enjoy getting each perspective as the author goes back and forth between the two main characters points of view. I found myself smiling a lot at the silliness that accompanies the female main character.

Dec 21, Ellie rated it it was amazing. Enchantingly whimsical and beautiful; we follow a maiden during her misadventures. Encountering various curious characters, gods and possible monsters, a delightful tale of love and living to the fullest is weaved.

Needless to say, I read this in a day, enthralled and endeared by this novel, I fell in love. Sep 21, Shoroug rated it it was ok.

I'm pretty sure this is my least favorite book of the year; in fact, I feel like I'm already having a slump thanks to how disappointing this book was.

I love Japanese books but somehow, they've become hit or miss with me recently, I got into this one very excited thinking it was a cute romance story that would make me smile and give me butterflies, spoiler alert my expectations weren't met.

The night is short, walk on girl is so peculiar but not in a fun or interesting way at all, at least for me. The book comes in 4 separate chapters, in which we follow the main character as she goes through different situations while being followed by a guy who likes her, through her journey she meets different people, in the first chapter she spends the night drinking with an old man and he sexually harasses her but she's fine with it???

Not to mention the weird elephant bottom thing in the 3rd chapter?? The chapter I enjoyed the most was the second one as it took place in a used bookfair and there were so many references to famous books I'm familiar with, the writing is also pretty nice, I could easily picture Kyoto's streets and flickering lights.

However, the rest of the book wasn't that good, I'm okay with magical realism but this one was just plain weird, it reminded me of Nakano thrift shop which was utterly painful and agonizing to read, and I couldn't even finish it even after months.

Too bad I wanted to read Penguin Highway for the same author, now I'm not sure anymore, I guess I'll be content with the animated movie.

Jan 09, Kelly rated it liked it Shelves: this-year. I picked up this book after seeing the film adaptation by the same name which is done in the gorgeous art style of the cover art.

I would recommend both the book and the film, but with the caveat that they are both VERY odd. Odd enough that you'll genuinely find yourself wondering: What IS this?

In answer, this novel is a picaresque story with elements of magical realism featuring specific aspects of Japanese culture a detailed Kyoto setting most prominently loosely following the outlandish efforts of an earnest but anxious young man to catch the attention of an optimistic and enthusiastic young woman.

Each section of the book centers around a particular event which unfolds with escalating absurdity from the perspective of each character and widens the cast of recurring side characters.

It does not makes sense. The conversations don't make sense, the character motivations don't make sense, and a variety of plot events don't make sense.

If it seems like I'm belaboring this point, it's because looking for the sense of the writing while reading spoils the book.

There isn't any. It's a Kyoto fever dream by way of a rom-com on LCD that nonetheless ends up being rather sweet. Just roll with it.

A cute slice of life anime style romance story with fantastical elements. Could not fault it whatsoever. However the story was not as exciting as I would have liked.

This book read like alternating diary entries. It is about a girl who journeys through small adventures in life, meeting friends along the way, and a boy who watches her from behind the scenes longing to be with her.

It takes place in Kyoto over a span of 6 months. Honestly I found the male protagonist to be a l A cute slice of life anime style romance story with fantastical elements.

Honestly I found the male protagonist to be a little bit creepy. The heroine was cute though. I think this book is good for people who like really simple slice of life stories.

I think the anime movie is a really good adaptation and probably better than the book, just because the book felt really slow paced and the movie was only 1hr 30mins.

She is sexually assaulted, but gratefully so WTF!?! We continue with a university boy who is senior to the girl. He spends the better part of a year stalking the girl through a quartet of interconnected vignettes.

Coincidentally enough, it concludes with a highly communicable contagion. The most interesting part is this last chapter as We begin with an unnamed university girl who leaves a wedding to begin an alcohol fueled pub crawl.

The most interesting part is this last chapter as it demonstrates how we find ourselves in this COVID nightmare with the casual, thoughtless spread of disease.

The alternating voices in this one are virtually indistinguishable throughout. This one is just short of tedious. Despite the simple boy-chases-girl premise, this is an imaginative, fun read that brings elements of fantasy to the streets of Kyoto.

I've read this book after watching the movie and at first I was a bit perplexed because the first chapter was identical to what I had seen in the movie.
