There is a Simpsons episode where an advertisement comes on Homer's television for a demolition derby at the local stadium.
The ad says: "No plot! No characters! To be sure, there are insightful documentaries into the history of building the giant rockets, which should be played first and dutifully absorbed, but once you get to the actual launch footage, those are the bits you're going to rewind and play again.
And again, with the volume turned up loud. The foundating-shaking, glass-shattering, crackling thunder of the Saturn rockets is like the roar of the apocalypse: your neighbors will complain if you have a home theatre and a decent subwoofer.
Let them. If you like special effects and the spectacular, you'll love this. And the explosions are real, albeit controlled barely.
The cameras recording the Apollo launches are both tracking following the vehicle through stage separation and tower jettison , and static pad and long distance cameras.
The footage they provide is nothing short of awesome. You've seen some of them in newsreels, but you've not seen them like this, flawlessly transferred from 35mm to digital, with accompanying 5.
What is it? Why is it there? Try to find out I couldn't. This was the test where Walter Cronkite was showered with ceiling plaster in his broadcast booth three miles away, as the noise threatened to destroy the building.
These F-1 engines each consumed 3 metric tons a second, and there were five of them. Some of the super slow-mo footage here is incredible, especially for its time.
It comes in waves. Note: the 5. Not a fault, just an observation in case you are curious. This is simply a terrific assembly of historical footage which shows the monumental achievement of the Apollo program in the s and 70s.
But more than anything, it's just sheer visceral fun. Robert I. Hedges Top Contributor: Pets. I have seen most Apollo documentaries, and I have read most Apollo books, but Spacecraft Films have really outdone themselves this time.
This three disc set includes footage of every Saturn V launch including Skylab from multiple angles. Original and in some cases digitally enhanced audio is present, and in some cases the Launch Control Center and MOCR tapes are available to listen to while viewing.
A word of warning though: most of the MOCR tapes are not in sync with the film, which can be a bit confusing for people new to the terminology and procedures under discussion this seems most pronounced on some of the Apollo 8 footage ; the DVDs always point out when the soundtrack will be de-synchronized.
The footage compiled is stunning to say the least, and while all launches are covered more than adequately, Apollo 8, 11, and 12 get even more detailed coverage.
The camera angles presented are amazing in their completeness; there are stationary cameras, tracking cameras, and onboard cameras there's even a camera in the Apollo 8 Liquid Oxygen [LOX] tank designed to document draining and sloshing effects.
The DVD set also has fascinating interviews with many of the engineers from the Saturn V program, as well as other features such as stacking operations, pad operations, test firing, etc.
These are each around 18 minutes long, and detail progress made on the Saturn V for a given quarter.
All were made before the first Saturn V flew, but the level of detail regarding construction, development, and testing is outstanding.
Spacecraft Films should be commended for producing yet another superior and important documentary on spacecraft. If possible I would read "Saturn" before watching the DVDs to better understand important background information on the Saturn V, and thus be better able to appreciate the footage seen on the DVD set.
This set gets my highest possible rating and endorsement. What an awesome set of DVD's. Standing head and shoulders and waist above all other successful launchers was the Saturn 5.
I used to pace out the first stage diameter in my house, and then pace out it's length on the footpath.
I have yet to see one, that is my goal. To see the various stages of construction and testing was the gem.
I look at the S1C stage test firings and have to remind myself, the S1C is 42meters ft tall, and the test stand dwarfs it.
In other words, we are are given a peak into the infrastructure that was required to put the Moon missions together. Buy this DVD set.
Take time to watch every frame. People will be watching this thousands of years into the future. Really great collection of original films and interview soundtracks.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I will break this down to review each disc in the set. The documentary is interesting, as ever, though I found it less interesting than the Saturn 1 documentary.
Again it scores over the Project Gemini documentary by not being over-narrated. The other sections of footage are nice little bits to have, especially the engine test-firings, which actually include the appropriate sound.
Having said that, watching the five J-2 engines firing for the entire duration of a planned mission does get rather dull, since they go on for around six minutes.
The other clips have no sound, but are covered by interview audio excerpts. Disc Two is full of launch footage, as with the Saturn 1 set.
The big difference here is that all the launch footage has accompanying sound. As with the Saturn 1 set, some of this seems rather odd as the footage is in slow motion but the sound is not.
Some shots are covered by the air-to-ground communications with the craft, which makes the whole lot seem a lot more real.
This disc includes some of the classic space footage, such as the section of the interstage separating from Apollo 4. Disc Three contains more launch footage from Apollos 8, 11 and 12, though I am not sure why the footage was divided this way.
One item of interest is the shot of Apollo 11 lifting off taken from ground level and focused on the base of the rocket. It is in slow motion, and the sound is also slowed, making for a rather odd experience.

Only the first one can be said to have a real program on it. It deals with the rationale and development and does a good job in a little time.
The rest though, might disappoint, depending upon the desires of the viewers. It is mostly raw footage.
There is coverage of each of the Saturn I and IB flights and the footage comes from many angles and perspectives but it is just that: raw footage with no commentary.
This is a real bonanza for rocket buffs but is likely to disappoint people who want more information. Included are interviews with many who took part in the program.
Footage is present from each of the Saturn I and IB launches. The two "features" consist of footage of all the Saturn I launches and all the Saturn IB launches respectively.
There is no commentary, just the footage. The extras are just as mundane and consist of footage from a LM checkout, Skylab and the installation of an H-1 engine.
These are taken from the Apollo 7 flight and include footage from the perimeter, Tracking views, swing arm and tower views and pedestal views.
I agree with everything good which has been written by my fellow fans of the space program. These enhanced films of the Saturn I series are the clearest and most comprehensive coverage you will find on DVD anywhere.
Caution non-space fans, most of ths footage is recorded by engineering cameras filming every moment of flight from various vantage points including within the fuel tanks of sloshing propellant, from various stages of the launch vehicle peering up at the next stage or aft at the prior stage, stage retro rockets and upper stage ullage rockets firing, etc.
However, feel free to buy it for any real space cadets you know. I can say I am excited - here is simply everything you want to know on Saturns development.
Opening documentary is making you ready to absorb the rest and nothing is omited - assembly, test firings, pad operations and launches.
Selection is made very carefully trying to avoid repeating even if it is simply not completely possible. You can see very nicely how the Pad 34 construction developed and how the Saturns themselves changed from launch to launch - e.
Apollo 7 launch is covered in full, I do not think there was a camera which is not on the DVD. I would always encourage the Spacecraftfilms to put maximum available material, if somebody thinks it's too detailed there's always the option to skip some part.
But for the space enthusiasts this is fantastic - I always dreamt of the material like this being put together.
If you're 'turned on' by rocket lauches, then you MUST have this! Bought this hard-to-find DVD set as a present for my brother-- excellent material for folks who are in to this sort of detailed information!
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. Since this is a three-disc set, I'll divide my review into three parts.
Disc one is by far the best of the bunch for the average viewer. It contains a minute documentary on the development and flight of the Saturn I and IB rockets, with beautifully restored archive footage.
Unklike the Project Gemini documentary I reviewed previously, this one is far easier to watch as the narration is broken up by new interviews and occasionally just some really beautiful footage from the launches.
The bonus features include some fascinating material recorded by cameras placed inside the fuel tanks in order to monitor fuel behaviour during flight.
These are interesting because of their rarity, and the fact that this is not the sort of material usually trotted out in programs about rocketry.
There is also some beautiful in-flight footage of the staging of an early Saturn flight. There is also some footage of pad preparation and the damage done by the launch.
This disc alone makes the set worth having. Disc two contains the film of every Saturn I and IB launch bar one. The main points of interest here are the different configurations of each rocket, and the tracking shots that, in some cases, follow the launch right through to staging.
However, there is a limit to how interesting watching the same launch from umpteen different angles can be, and one launch is pretty much like another.
Having said that, some of them do contain shots taken from a novel angle.
